Lobos Brew 8/18: Family Matters
Today, soccer draws, volleyball in The Pit, and the sweetest story you'll see today.
Good morning! We are saddened by the passing of Jim Cromartie, former New Mexico quarterback. He led the Lobos to their very first bowl victory in the 1961 Aviation Bowl. He was an assistant coach from 1965-1967 and visited Coach Gonzales’ practices often. He will be missed greatly.
What all is steeping in today’s Brew?
⚽️ Draw it up
🏈 Family matters
🐺 And much, much more!
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Draw It Up. The Lobos finished the season opener in a 1-1 draw against Texas Tech, thanks to Ellie Robinson’s late goal. Allie Davis had some huge saves in the match against the Red Raiders. You can see all of the highlights here!

🔼 Counting Down. There are just two Saturday’s separating us and Lobo football! We’re 15 days away, so we’re going to check out the 15’s on our roster.
🏈 Luke Wysong is a known name in Lobo Land. The junior wide receiver has led the Lobos in receptions the last two seasons. A Rio Rancho native, he was the New Mexico Gatorade Player of the Year and the Albuquerque Journal 6A State Player of the Year in football. His freshman season, he led the Lobos with 24 receptions and yards with 224. Last year, he had 34 receptions and was second in yards (291) and touchdowns. His little brother, Evan, is also on the team. His dad and two uncles played football at New Mexico and his mom was a Lobo volleyball player.
🏈 Hunter Wiggins also wears No. 15. He’s a freshman safety from San Diego, California. He won Lincoln High School’s first California state title and was among California’s top high school senior safeties by Cannon Sports. He was also a 2016 Point Loma’s Pop Warner Super Bowl Champion.
🔼 Practice Round. The Lobo volleyball season will officially get started next week, but first, we have an exhibition game against New Mexico Highlands this weekend. Head to The Pit tomorrow at 1:00pm for your first look at the 2023 squad. Admission is free and there will be a post-match clinic for kids 13 and below on the court.
The Lobos were picked to finish fourth by the conference’s coaches which is the highest predicted finish in Coach Newman-Gonchar’s era.
🐺 ONE BIG THING
Biggest Fan. Family matters, and Dorian Lewis is lucky enough to have his 8-year-old little sister, Kiyoko, on the sidelines taking photos. Dorian, a Cleveland High School graduate, went to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas and was away from his family for two years. Having big brother back means the world to Kiyoko, and she may be one of the best photographers around!
