Lobos Brew 7/28: Final destination
Today, we're looking at fall camp, the home opener, and one Lobo going pro.
Good morning! The running back room is looking beefed up less than one week from fall camp. Check out the guys! Rest up this weekend, Lobos — football is upon us.
What all is steeping in today’s Brew?
🏀 Coming out ahead
🎽 Two new Lobos
🐺 And much, much more!
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Final Destination. New Mexico was named one of 13 schools to come out ahead of the transfer portal for men’s basketball. ESPN+ gave the Lobos the nod, admiring Coach Pitino’s work with Jamal Mashburn Jr., Jaelen House, and Morris Udeze. Nelly Junior Joseph, Jemarl Baker, Mustapha Amzil, and Isaac Mushila are four transfers expected to contribute nicely to the Lobos season. The Lobos are in good company with Kansas, Villanova, Gonzaga, Arkansas, Xavier, Florida, Arizona, Texas, TCU, Kansas State, Cal, and Clemson also on the list.
🔼 Summer Camp. The Lobo soccer team is hosting the 2023 Southwest Summer College ID Camp this weekend, July 29 & 30. Girls from 8th grade - college sophomores are welcome to train with many notable college coaches from across the country at UNM Robertson Field and the indoor practice facility. The cost of this College Prospect Camp is $250 and players will have the opportunity to see what it’s like to be a New Mexico soccer player trained by the Lobo staff.
🔼 Two Is Better Than One. Two new Lobos were hired to the track & field staff as assistant coaches. D’nara Jones will coach sprints and jumps while Jared Berryman will serve as the director of operations. Jones was an assistant coach at Illinois State where she coached the jumpers to two school records. Berryman comes from Bradley where he worked with head coach Darren Gauson last season.
🔼 Lining Up. There are just 36 days until kickoff, so let’s look at No. 36 on the Lobo roster, senior linebacker Syaire Riley. He started in two games and played in eight last season, recording 36 tackles, a QB hurry, and three tackles for loss. In 2021, he started in 11 games and was fifth on the team with 45 tackles. He had a big onside kick recovery his freshman season against Nevada.
🐺 ONE BIG THING
Former Lobo Jadyn Edwards is playing at the highest level of professional women’s soccer in the US. Jadyn signed with the OL Reign last month, an NWSL team in Seattle. She has some pretty cool teammates in Seattle, including USWNT stars Megan Rapinoe, Emily Sonnett, and Rose Lavelle. Jadyn made her pro debut on June 29 and finished her 15 minutes of play with one shot on goal.
