Lobos Brew 6/23: Football is for everyone

Today, we're celebrating a conference sweep in track & field.

Good morning! And Happy National Typewriter Day to all who celebrate! On this day in 1868, inventor Christopher Latham Sholes was granted a patent on his groundbreaking invention—and we’re honoring today by making a really loud “Ding! Ziiiiiiipppppp!” sound every time we make a new paragraph in today’s Brew.

“Ding! Ziiiiiiipppppp!”

Yeah, that definitely won’t get old to anyone else in the office.

So, what else is mixing in today’s Brew?

🔼 Just The Two Of Us. Claiming the top Mountain West Conference awards for the 2023 track and field season—Amelia Mazza-Downie and Lokesh Sathyanathan were named the Female Student-Athlete of the Year and Male Student-Athlete of the Year, respectively.

Both All-Americans and Mountain West champions, the duo made it the first time since the conference began issuing the awards in 2008 that any school has swept the outdoor honors in the same season.

🏆 Amelia Mazza-Downie claimed two All-America awards during the outdoor season after finishing fourth in the 10,000 meters and ninth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Championships earlier this month. The third-year Lobo ran a 10,000 meters time of 32:51.90 minutes to earn first-team All-America, and a time of 15:56.35 minutes in the 5,000 meters to earn second-team All-America honors.

🏆 Lokesh Sathyanathan earned second-team All-America in the long jump by finishing 15th at the NCAA Championships, and capped his freshman year with a jump of 7.66 meters (25’ 1.75”) at the national championship meet. That came after he earned the Mountain West Performer of the Meet award by winning the conference title in the long jump on May 12. He crushed his PR with a jump of 8.02 meters (26’ 3.75”) to place first at the conference championships. It was his second all-conference performance of the year, after he finished third at the Mountain West Indoor Championships.

🔼 Football Is For Everyone. There is no offseason on New Mexico football’s calendar. The latest example? This past week, the Lobos worked with Western Sky Community Care and the New Mexico Activities Association to bring local high school athletes some one-on-one time with a trio of Pro Football Hall of Fame members in Darrell Green, Drew Pearson, and Tony Dorsett.

🐺 ONE BIG THING

Where were you in 1986? The original Top Gun was the movie event of the year and Lionel Richie’s “Say You, Say Me” was playing non-stop on the radio.

Okay, does that seem sufficiently long enough ago yet? Because that’s how far back New Mexico’s grade history goes back and this past spring semester’s 3.41 cumulative GPA by Lobo student-athletes marked the highest it’s ever been in a non-COVID semester.
