Lobos Brew 2/6: Freshmen of the Week for MBB & WBB

The men's and women's basketball teams both had Mountain West Freshmen of the Week honors.

Good morning, New Mexico. Let’s talk baseball! The Lobos are tabbed fourth in the 2026 Mountain West baseball Preseason Poll. Khalil Walker was named to the Mountain West All-Conference Preseason Team.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Sweep! The women’s basketball team completed its season sweep over Wyoming on Wednesday. The Lobos won 58-51. The team shot 41.8% from the field. Nayli Padilla led the team for the fourth time this season with 13 points off the bench. UNM is now 16-7 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

🔺 Anotha’ One. Men’s basketball player Jake Hall was named the Old Trapper Mountain West Freshman of the Week. This is his second straight week and third time in the past four weeks earning the honor. Hall averaged 21.5 points last week and 68% from the floor and 60% from behind the arc.

🔺 Earned It. Women’s basketball player Laila Abdurraqib was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week. This is her second time earning the award this season. Abdurraqib averaged 8.5 points between UNM’s two wins over UNLV and Utah State.

🔺 Welcome! The volleyball team named Jeremiah Estes as the new associate head coach. Estes has more than three decades of experience in coaching. He has helped lead championship programs in three different countries. Estes résumé includes two Swiss League national championships as head coach at Volero Zurich (2005, 2006), an NCAA National Championship at Long Beach State as part of the first undefeated title team in NCAA history, and multiple European Champions League titles during his tenure with Uralochka in Russia—one of the most successful professional volleyball clubs in the world. 

🔺 Snapped. The men’s basketball team played Utah State on Wednesday. The Lobos fell 86-66 and snapped their 23-game home win streak. Tomislav Buljan led the team with 17 points. Tajavis Miller scored 11 points.
