Lobos Brew 4/18: Heart of the issue

Today, we're gearing up for a little interstate rivalry.

Good morning! And if you’ve waited until Tax Day to file your taxes, take some comfort that the Lobos did the same thing a week ago when they waited until the last minute to win on a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field.

What else are we throwing into today’s Brew?

🔑 Keys to the game against the Aggies
❤️ The heart of the issue
🐺 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 State Of Affairs. After splitting a midweek series against Colorado State-Pueblo, the Lobos are going south to face New Mexico State for a chance to even up the in-state series. And while the Aggies are near the bottom of the WAC when it comes to just a few statistical categories like team batting average, runs scored, earned run average, and more… we’ll still have our eye on a few individual matchups and specific game situations that will likely sway the game one way or another.

So, without further adieu, our keys to the game for tonight’s matchup:

🚀 All Or Nothing: New Mexico State has the fewest runs scored (5.80) and extra base hits (1.54) per game, they’re also averaging 1.48 home runs per game—most of any team in the WAC. This is an Aggie team with power at the plate, and the Lobos bullpen will have to stay on their toes all game long.

💥 Four Sure: They’re also heavy at the top when it comes to getting on base. Four Aggies are currently batting better than .300 on the season, and Keith Jones II is getting All-Conference consideration with his .370 average.

🆓 Base Motive: The Lobos are averaging fewer than one stolen base attempt per game, but that might change tonight. New Mexico State has only picked off nine runners through 31 games. A prime opportunity to get that average up.

🔼 That’s The Ticket. In case you missed it (or just went off the grid, which is never a bad idea on a Monday…) New Mexico football season tickets are now on sale. First, secure your seats. Once you’ve got that checked off your list, you’re free to daydream about tailgate plans and BBQ recipes for the fall.

🔼 11th Time’s The Charm. New Mexico women’s golf begins the postseason with a trip to California for the Mountain West Championship, starting today and running through Thursday. The Lobos enter the tournament ranked No. 44 nationally in GolfStat and are the second-highest ranked team in the Mountain West, behind only No. 10 San Jose State. New Mexico’s lineup for the event is a fearsome sixsome of Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana, Lauren Lehigh, Myah McDonald, Maria Caparros Levin, and Lisa-Marie Pagliano with Annie Saechueng as the alternate in the lineup.

The Lobos have four top-three finishes this season in nine events and two individual victories—Napat Lertsadwattana won the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Colorado in the fall and Myah McDonald won The Show at Spanish Trail in Las Vegas in February. New Mexico is searching for their 10th Mountain West title since joining the conference.

🤔 LOBOS TRIVIA

We just mentioned that New Mexico women’s golf is searching for their 11th Mountain West title since joining the conference. Their most recent trophy? As recently as 2021.

But when was their first conference championship?

🐺 ONE BIG THING

Heart of the issue. New Mexico student-athletes from the football and soccer programs, gathered for a CPR event in Albuquerque this past weekend alongside local members of the community. It’s called “Project Heart Start” and it’s the first time ever that the Lobos have brought this event to the field.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 2000

New Mexico was a charter member of the Mountain West Conference in 1998 and fewer than two years later they were already hoisting trophies.

Have a great Tuesday, y’all.
