Lobos Brew 8/25: Let's Get It Started

Today, volleyball season is here, Woman of the Year nominee, and more.

Good morning! Yesterday was National Waffle Day, and the softball team played a game of start, bench, cut: waffles, pancakes, and french toast. What’s your favorite?

What all is steeping in today’s Brew?

🏐 Getting the season started
🏆 Woman of the Year nominee
🐺 And much, much more!

🎥 MIC’D UP

Mic’d Up with Jacory Merritt. We’re continuing the mic’d up series today with running back Jacory Merritt! This will be Jacory’s first season with the Lobos, he spent his first four seasons at Alabama State. He rushed for 1,164 yards and 13 touchdowns over 31 games. He also had 29 receptions for 335 yards and a touchdown. Before college, he played football at Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama. He earned All-State honors and two All-Metro selections.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Let’s Get It Started. The volleyball team is starting their regular season this weekend at the UC Irvine Invitational. They’ll play Seton Hall this morning, UC Irvine tonight, and San Francisco tomorrow. The Lobos are all-time undefeated against these teams. They’re picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West — the highest they’ve been picked to finish in Coach Newman-Gonchar’s four seasons.

🔼 Eight Is Great. We’re just 8 days from Lobo football, that’s almost one week! That means we’re getting to know our No. 8’s.

🏈 Jeremiah Hixon is a transfer wide receiver from Alabama State, where he played with Jacory Merritt. He had 97 career receptions for 1,211 yards and 11 touchdowns at Alabama State. In 2021, he led the team in receiving with 44 catches. He’s from Spanish Fort High School in Monroeville, Alabama where he did it all, playing football, basketball, and baseball.

🏈 Donte Martin is a more familiar name to Lobo fans. He started in nine games at corner last year, recording 28 tackles. He also had an interception and 6 pass breakups. Donte sits at fifth on the Lobo career list with 25 career pass breakups. He’s expected to be a veteran leader in the secondary.

🔼 The Polls Are In. Going into a new era of cross country under new Coach Darren Gauson, the 15-time Mountain West Champion Lobo women’s cross country team was selected to finish second in the conference preseason poll. The Lobos received three first-place votes by the league’s coaches. The men’s team was picked to finish sixth, which is where they ended last season. The season will begin at the Lori Fitzgerald Open in Las Cruces on Sept. 2.

🐺 ONE BIG THING

Top Dog. One of the Mountain West nominees for NCAA Woman of the Year is Stefanie Parsons! In her two seasons as a Lobo, she earned three All-American honors and four All-Mountain West honors. In the classroom, she earned Academic All-America honors and was an All-Academic Athlete by the USTFCCCA. The winner will be announced at the 2024 NCAA Convention.
