Lobos Brew 5/22: Running Wild

Plus: Soccer's schedule is in.

Good morning, New Mexico. New Mexico piled up 13 runs in the first four innings to cruise past Nevada 13-4 in the Mountain West Tournament opener in Arizona. Lenny Junior Ashby led the charge, going 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and five RBI, while Antonio Gianni and Akili Carris each added multi-hit nights. Ryan Castillo earned his eighth win, the most by a Lobo pitcher in a single season since Carson Schneider won nine in 2016, and Cooper Corkrean shut the door with 3.1 scoreless innings.

The win is head coach Tod Brown's first in the Mountain West Tournament at New Mexico. The Lobos face top-seeded San Diego State on Friday at 2 p.m. MT as part of the double-elimination portion of the bracket.

🔺 Four Honored. New Mexico placed four players on the All-Mountain West baseball teams heading into the conference tournament. Starting pitcher Ryan Castillo earned First Team honors after leading the Lobos with a 4.91 ERA and 41 strikeouts in league play, while infielder Akili Carris, outfielder Khalil Walker, and reliever Cooper Corkrean landed on the Second Team. Walker earns all-conference recognition for the third straight year, and Corkrean was dominant out of the bullpen in his first season with the program, holding conference opponents to a .194 average. It marks the third consecutive year four or more Lobos have earned all-conference nods.

🔺 Running Wild. New Mexico is sending 26 athletes to the NCAA West Region Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Ark., marking the second straight year with 25-plus qualifiers! Habtom Samuel leads the way, ranking No. 1 in the nation in the 5,000 meters and No. 1 in the West Region in the 10,000 meters. Pamela Kosgei ranks second in the region in the women's 5,000, 10,000, and 3,000-meter steeplechase. Thirteen of the 26 qualifiers are making return trips to regionals, and four entries (Samuel, Kosgei, Marion Jepngetich, and the women's 4x400 relay) enter ranked among the top 12 in the region with a shot at advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene.

🔺 Mark Your Calendar. New Mexico soccer has finalized its complete 2026 schedule under first-year head coach Karley Nelson, featuring 10 home matches across 18 total games. The Lobos open Aug. 20 against Northern Arizona and host Gonzaga three days later, a first meeting since 1995. A road stretch takes UNM to Colorado, Northern Colorado, and New Mexico State in early September before closing non-conference play at home against Utah Tech and Idaho State.

Conference play begins Sept. 24 with back-to-back home matches against San José State and Nevada, and the Mountain West slate features first-time league matchups against newcomers UC Davis, UTEP, and Hawai'i, including the program's first-ever trip to the islands. The Lobos close the regular season at home against Air Force on Nov. 7.

🔺 This Or That? New Lobos women’s basketball coach Amy Eagan is here for a round of This or That?

🔺 Keep Watch. Congratulations to Pamela Kosgei, who landed on the 2026 Bowerman Watch List! Kosgei finished as a finalist for the award last season.
