Lobos Brew 5/29: Running Wild at the NCAA First Round
Plus: Are you ready for kickoff?
Good morning, New Mexico. Are you ready for kickoff? New Mexico football will appear on national television at least eight times during the 2026 season. The Lobos open at home against Central Michigan on FS1 at 8 p.m., marking the program's first home opener against an FBS opponent since 2014, before a marquee first-ever trip to Oklahoma at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

The 116th Rio Grande Rivalry at New Mexico State airs on CBS Sports Network at 1:30 p.m., marking the first time the rivalry has been broadcast on a national network. At home, key Mountain West matchups against UNLV (Nov. 14) and Air Force on Black Friday (Nov. 28) air on The CW, with a potential Homecoming date against North Dakota State also in the mix. Road conference games at Nevada and Wyoming were moved to Friday nights on CBS Sports Network and FS1.

🔺 Run Wild. Habtom Samuel won the 10,000-meter semifinal at the NCAA West Preliminaries in 28:42.53, punching his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the third straight year in the event. The reigning 2024 national champion and 2025 national runner-up remains undefeated against collegiate competition this academic year and will also contest the 5,000-meter semifinal Friday, where he set the collegiate record just days ago. Evans Kiplagat joined Samuel with an eighth-place finish to qualify for nationals for the first time in his career. Matthew Endrody also advanced, finishing ninth in the 1,500-meter first round to move on to today’s quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.

🔺 Day Two. New Mexico had a huge second day at the NCAA West Preliminaries as Pamela Kosgei punched her ticket to defend her 10,000-meter national title, finishing as regional runner-up in 31:27.58 alongside BYU's Jane Hedengren, both crushing a facility record that had stood since 2009. Kosgei returns tomorrow in the 5,000 meters, where she and teammate Marion Jepngetich finished first and fourth nationally last season. Taniya Looney posted the fastest 100-meter time of the entire first round at 11.07, a wind-legal program record, and also advanced in the 200 meters. Three Lobos (Tilly Simpson, Li-Mari Dekker, Jasmine Wood) moved on in the 1,500 meters, and Eva Ngom advanced in the 400 meters, giving New Mexico six women heading into tomorrow’s quarterfinals.

🔺 Welcome To The Pack. New Mexico men's tennis hired Wyatt DeMulling as assistant coach after a season at Oregon in the Big Ten. The Seattle native is familiar with the Mountain West, having earned All-Mountain West singles honors during his playing career at Boise State, where he recorded 65 career singles victories. DeMulling played professionally from 2021-23 before transitioning to coaching, working with ATP professional Lawrence Sciglitano and later developing high-performance junior players.
