📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Wrapping Things Up. We’re just 10 days away from football kicking off! Coach Danny Gonzales met with the media after Saturday’s scrimmage to give his fall camp wrap-up. This week, they’re focusing on weights and game preparation for Texas A&M and next week will be true game week focus. Coach Gonzales goes through roster depth and explains different positions.
🔼 Perfect 10’s. Like we mentioned before, there are only 10 days until kickoff at Texas A&M. We have two very important No. 10’s on our roster, QB1 Dylan Hopkins and Ray Guy Watch List punter Aaron Rodriguez.
🏈 First, let’s talk QB1 — Dylan Hopkins. We haven’t had the chance to see him in a Lobo uniform on the field yet because he’s a transfer from UAB. At UAB, he went 318-for-508 for 4,472 yards with 31 touchdowns. Before UAB, he was the consensus No. 2 prep quarterback in Tennessee. He won the 2017 state title and was the runner-up for Mr. Football in the state. We’re ready to watch the Dylan Hopkins era of Lobo football!
🏈 Aaron Rodriguez is a Lobo name known around the country. The redshirt-senior punter is on the preseason Ray Guy Award Watch List which goes to the best college punter in the nation. Last season, he led the nation in total punts. He sits at third on the career average list at New Mexico with 43.5 yards per boot. He’s also the kick holder for the team. Before New Mexico, he spent two years at Missouri. A-Rod is from Newhall, California where he was the 2016 Special Teams Player of the Year.
🔼 New Addition. We’re welcoming Lobo basketball newcomer, Deraje Agbaosi! The 6’7 forward is from Union, New Jersey, but played high school basketball at El Dorado High School in Albuquerque — so he’s no stranger to the area. He earned All-State honors in his senior season at El Dorado, averaging 16.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. He then played a post graduate year at Phoenix Prep before enrolling at North Alabama. He spent two seasons at North Alabama where he appeared in 33 games off the bench.
🐺 ONE BIG THING
Comeback Season. Three Lobos were named to the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year Award Watch List. The CSC in association with the AP and the Fiesta Bowl Organization announced Lobos Tavian Combs, Trace Bruckler, and Ryan Davis to the list. The award goes to college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. Tavian and Trace were starters in 2022 until they were both sidelined due to injury. Tavian ranks among the top-25 in active players in tackles per game and he’s expected to start again at the Lobo back spot. Trace was a breakout starter at tight end as a true freshman in 2021 and he’s expected to play a big role in the new offense. Ryan played at UAB last season under new Lobo offensive coordinator Bryan Vincent. He is coming back from several injuries, but when he’s been healthy he’s had 22 career receptions for 280 yards.
