Lobos Brew 8/24: Shock The World

Today, a Lobo is a World Champion, soccer game day, and more!

Good morning! Actually, it’s a great morning! A former Lobo is a World Champion! You’ll learn more as you scroll in today’s Brew.

What all is steeping in today’s Brew?

🎥 Coach Vincent on the mic
⚽️ Soccer welcomes the Titans
🐺 And much, much more!

🎥 MIC’D UP

Mic’d Up with Bryant Vincent. Today, we’re switching things up. Instead of mic’ing up a player, we have new Offensive Coordinator Bryant Vincent on the mic! Coach Vincent joined the family in December after spending five seasons at UAB as their OC and quarterbacks coach. He served as their interim head coach last season and led the Blazers to a 2022 Bahamas Bowl win over Miami of Ohio. He coached Lobo quarterback Dylan Hopkins there, along with wide receiver Ryan Davis.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Clash Of Titans. We’re closing out the soccer team’s three-game home-stand tonight when Cal State Fullerton comes to town. This will be the first meeting against the Titans since 2011. The Lobos are on a 10-match unbeaten streak after starting this season with two draws. Lobo goalie Alli Davis earned the first Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after recording 12 saves last week. Cal State Fullerton is coming off a loss to BYU and a draw with Boston College. The match begins at 7:30pm and you can buy tickets here. If you can’t make the match, it will be live on the Mountain West Network.

🔼 Nine Is Fine. Buckle down, Lobos — there are 9 more days until football season! You know what that means, we’re checking out the No. 9’s on the roster.

🏈 Noa Pola-Gates is a senior transfer safety from Nebraska. He was named to the 2023 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year watch list last week. He joined the Lobos after spring practice and is expected to be a major contributor to the defense. After high school, he was selected for both the 2019 Army All-American Bowl and the Polynesian Bowl. He was also All-Arizona and was ranked the No. 3 player in the state by 247Sports.

🏈 Sherod White is a senior running back who played in 10 games last season. He had 40 carries and led the team with 3 touchdowns. Before coming to New Mexico, he played at Mt. San Jacinto Junior College and was the team’s MVP. He was also named a JC All-American after scoring 15 rushing and 5 receiving touchdowns in 2021.

🔼 Shock The World. Former Lobo track star Josh Kerr shocked the world at the World Athletics Championships yesterday! He came back and overtook Jakob Ingebrigsten in the 1,500m final to win gold in 3:29:38. Josh won three NCAA titles and eight Mountain West titles as a Lobo. He also set the collegiate record in the 1,500m run. In 2020, he was Britain’s only male track medalist in Tokyo, winning bronze. Congratulations, Josh!
